My Final Year Project Experience

There are two types of engineer found in India, one who studies according to syllabus only and one who studies as well as implement it. In electrical/electronics, it generally happens that an electrician has sound knowledge of any circuit than an engineer. The difference between two is that an electrician knows only how to implement it but an engineer knows both things, i.e., how to implement it and why he is doing it.

This is not our Robot. Just a pic.

The major problem comes while implementing any circuit is that when you are done with your circuit, you connect it with supply and you don't get the result. After this, you try to debug the circuit and rebuild it and then again you don't get the result after trying. This is the most irritating thing which many people face while building any circuit. To tackle this problem here are some suggestions:

1. Always take precautions while building the circuit.
2. If possible, first try to build it on breadboard. If you get success, only then make it on PCB.
3. Make sure that no wires are shorted.
4. Never give up.

In this post I am telling my experience regarding making of final year project, viz, RF Based Metal Detector Robotic Vehicle. We started making this project from 31st March and it took around 5 days & 5 nights to complete our project.

First, I am gonna explain who are "We".

1. Manu Khandelwal (Me)
2. Arvind Rajput
3. Piyush Pateriya
4. Rishabh Kadian

This was my team for the project, but only on the papers, i.e., officially. As every project group has this issue that only one or two people are interested in working and rest are interested in watching, playing and waiting for the work to be done. My group also had this issue but I knew this thing from the day when our group was made. So I had already made my mind that the whole work is to be done by two people, i.e., Me and Arvind.

As I have lot of friends, there are also some names in my friend list who are always ready for any help. So I am gonna showcase some names and I want to personally thank them because without them this project would have been really tough job for me.

So, the real team includes
1. Manu Khandelwal (Me)
2. Arvind Rajput
3. Ashwini Verma
4. Ashish Ahuja
These four are actual "We".

In the previous semester, we did only the simulation part to show in the minor project presentation. The simulation part was like a cake walk for us, because we easily found the required stuff on the internet. But now, this was our major project which has a total marks of 350 in this semester. So the project means a lot for us. But still, we were not taking our project seriously till the declaration of exhibition not done. On 30th March, while I was watching movie, our project mentor called me and told about the exhibition. After the call, my mind was in the confusing state, I was not able to decide that whether I am happy or stressed. "Happy", because our project got shortlisted for the exhibition and "stressed", because the project was not even started and the exhibition was scheduled on 5th April.

Just after this, I called Arvind, made a list of things to buy and went to Chandni Chowk. We got back to our place, i.e., Greater Noida at 10 PM after purchasing all the components. Now from 31, we had to start our project and we were left with 5 days. I started building the transmitter and receiver circuit with Arvind and in two days we completed the circuit. After completing the circuit, I moved on to the programming part. This was proved to be the toughest part for me because being an electrical engineering student, I didn't even know the "P" of programming. Ashish helped me in the programming part. Although, the programming was not much tough but still it took us 2 complete days to run the code.

Apart from this, we were also making metal detector circuit parallely. Now we had all the circuit, we just had to connect it from the battery. So I did the same but didn't get the result. At that time, I became tensed but I did not loose my hope and I was continue struggling with the circuit. But unfortunately didn't find the bug in the circuit. My roomates advised me to take a rest, then I started watching songs and went for a walk at 4 AM.

After coming back from the walk, I recalled the time when we were making solar inverter. At that time whenever we met some problem in building the circuit, we used to watch a motivational video by Amitabh Bachan. So I opened my laptop and played the same video. After all this, Ashwini checked the whole circuit and advised me to build it on breadboard, so I rebuilt the circuit with new components on the breadboard. In approximately 2 hours, I completed the circuit. Building a circuit on breadboard is easy and takes less time than building it on a PCB.

Now it was the day of exhibition, I was little scared and excited because I did not know that the circuit was going to be work or not. So I crossed my fingers and connected the battery, but still I met the same problem. I got frustrated after this, so I dropped the idea of showing the project in the exhibition. The exhibition's timing was 2 PM and at 1:45 PM, I was checking wires of the project in my room. Suddenly, a thing stroke my mind, and I replaced the encoder of the transmitter circuit with the new encoder and connected the battery and found what? Yes, the LED was glowing, the project was working correctly. We were shouting with our full energy.
After all this I quickly got ready, called my team and reached college to participate in the exhibition. Successfully we delivered our presentation to the judges and got back to our room.

During the making of project, there were several co-incidences happened. I learned one major thing from this project, viz Never Give Up. Sooner or later you will definitely get the result if you are working hard.

I call myself a traveller more than a travel blogger. I started my blog Harstuff Travel in 2013. Apart from this I am an Electrical Engineer. Love trekking and doing bike road trips. Like using technology but not addicted to it. I am a true foodie and love eating burgers.
