We all are aware of traffic jams in Delhi NCR. People generally say that if you are living in DELHI NCR then your half-life would be wasted by getting struck in jams. There is a say “Delhi me Jam nahi lagta, Jam me Delhi lagti hai”.
So the story begins from here…
Date 24 February 2017
I entered into my room after returning back from my sister’s marriage in Ghaziabad. I had to leave for Mcleodganj on the same day so I quickly packed up my bags, washed my clothes and bought some daily need items from the market. I had already booked my Volvo bus and the timing was 7:20 PM. As I did not sleep for the whole yesterday night, I was feeling very sleepy so I decided to take a nap. I set the alarm and slept.
I opened my eyes at 5 PM and quickly got ready to leave. I took an auto to Metro station and from here I faced the first tragedy. There was a massive traffic jam in Noida near sector 71. It generally takes 20 minutes to reach the metro station from my room, but on that day it took 50 minutes. Still I was left with some hope and I boarded the metro. I was sure that I would reach maximum by 7:10, as it generally takes 1 hour to reach the ISBT Kashmere Gate. As the metro started and I faced the second tragedy of my day. There was some technical fault in the metro due to which it was stopping several times. On that day I reached the ISBT at 7:30. I got really irritated at that time and the sound “asuvidha ke liye khed hai” (the inconvenience caused is Deeply Regretted) was boiling my blood. I calmed my mind and ran towards ISBT.
Reached ISBT at 7:30 and found what the bus had already gone. I sat on a chair and started thinking about what to do next. I got two options, either I take an ordinary bus or buy a ticket of Volvo bus again. As I was already short of money so there was no way to buy a new Volvo ticket again. I quickly enquired to some people and they directed me to HRTC office at the ISBT itself. I went to the office and described them the whole situation. The person verified my ticket and gave me the number of the Volvo bus conductor.
I called the conductor and asked about the bus exact location. At that time the bus was at Karnal bye pass. The Volvo conductor told me that if you want to catch the bus then you have to reach Haveli Karnal where we will stop for dinner. I cut the call and ran towards the platform and boarded a Punjab Roadways bus. At that time I was very confused that whether I am taking a right decision or not then I thought “jo hoga dekha jaayega” (whatever will happen I will manage). I just took out my ear phones and sat on the seat. The conductor came and asked
Conductor: where do you want to go?
Me: Which is the last stop?
Conductor: Patiala
Me: Great! Give me one ticket to Karnal.
After sometime, I started interacting with conductor and told him the whole situation. After finishing my story, I was waiting for his reply.
Conductor asked: Which deodorant you have used? (asked in Punjabi)
Me: Wildstone Chrome
Conductor: Very good fragrance
Me: Thank you bhaiya.
Me (again asked him forcefully): “bhaiya, will I be able to catch the bus?”
Conductor: Definitely. Don’t worry. ( I don’t know exactly what he said in Punjabi, but I got tension free )
After all this, the conductor said something in Punjabi to the driver and suddenly the speed of bus got increased. Then I took out my ear phones and started enjoying the journey. After 2 hours, I made a call to the Volvo conductor and asked about the location. His answer again made me tensed. He said that they will not stop at Haveli Karnal, they will have their dinner at Haveli Ambala.
I quickly went to the conductor and asked him to give one more ticket to Ambala. I got completely hopeless at that time when my current bus (Punjab roadways) stopped for dinner. I was very much sure that now I won’t be able to catch the bus. Then again, the bus conductor gave me hope and we resumed our journey with a positive hope.
After sometime, I again made a call to the Volvo conductor and asked him to give me a miss call when you leave from Haveli Ambala. I was feeling thrilled and tensed at the same time. The Volvo conductor called me when we were 10 minutes from Haveli Ambala. I requested him to wait, but he refused. Then I gave my phone to the conductor (Punjab roadways) and asked him to convince the Volvo conductor. He again said something in Punjabi and the conductor agreed to wait. And finally, I reached at Haveli Ambala. I thanked to the conductor and driver of both the buses and boarded the Volvo bus. As I entered into the bus, all the passengers were staring at me with anger. I ignored all and enjoyed my further journey.
The End
Uttar Pradesh is known for its historical monuments, different culture, politics, jugaad and its furious people. Here I am telling you one incident that recently happened with us in Etah.
It all started with the Arvind's (Talimpur) wedding day. We all were very excited for this wedding ceremony because Arvind was the first one in our group who was getting married.
It all started with the Arvind's (Talimpur) wedding day. We all were very excited for this wedding ceremony because Arvind was the first one in our group who was getting married.
We booked a taxi and started our journey from Delhi to Etah. Let me first tell you who we are - Manu (me -16k), Ashish (Ahuja), Charu (Cherry), Rishabh (Donald), Saurabh (Railway), Piyush (ISIS) & Ashwini (Vini). Before this journey, my father had warned me that do not mess with anyone in Etah. Just go, enjoy and be alert. But I did not take his advice seriously.
The journey started, I picked up everyone from their respective locations. We had a lot of fun in the car. Our driver was also very funny and he made our journey more joyful. We reached Etah at 7 in the evening and then met the groom, Arvind. After all this, we got ready and then started making our arrangements to make the occasion more enjoyable. Yes, a friend's wedding without a bottle, how this can be possible? We arranged it and took our dose and joined the baraat. We all danced like hell. Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Mithun, Dharmendra, Nagin dance, we did all.
Later, we went inside the marriage home and suddenly Charu noticed that he had lost his phone. From this moment, the night turned into an adventurous night. When we all came to know about Charu's phone, we all ran out from the marriage home and started searching for it. Outside the marriage home, we found that 3 boys on a bike surrounded by some men and they were shouting "yehi hai jisne phone lia hai" (they are the one who took the phone). We quickly ran to those boys and suddenly one boy(A) in red sweater started running. We all chased him with our full pace. The boy(A) went inside another marriage home to hide himself and we followed him to that place. Coincidently, there was another matter going on in that wedding in which some people were beating 2 men(B) furiously. Instead of becoming onlookers, we continued our search for the boy(A). We were feeling like that we are solving a CID case 😛. After searching for some time, Piyush found the boy(A) in the bathroom. We shouted and beat the door several times, but the boy(A) didn't come out. After some time, by somehow we got succeeded in convincing him and he opened the door.
With the coming out of the boy(A), a new twist came in front of us. When we asked the boy about the phone, he said that he gave the phone to another boy(C). We were already high and after this statement, our booziness got doubled. We decided that come what may, we will bring the phone back. While we were talking to that boy(A), suddenly 20 men(D) came with iron rods and started abusing us. Initially, we thought that those men(D) were from that boy's(A) side and they came to defend him. Later we got to know that they came to take the revenge for their men(B) who got beaten inside that marriage home and they had a misunderstanding that we have beaten those men(B). Suddenly that abusing moment turned into a massive fight. On one side there were 20 men(D) with iron rods in their hand and on the other side there were 5 including me, Ashish, Saurabh, Charu & Rishabh with empty hands. They volunteered with slaps, punches & kicks and we responded back with the same. Then they started beating us with those iron rods. They tried to hit on our heads but they missed every time. Saurabh got hit on his hand and I got on my waist. The situation was getting worse. One old man came out from the marriage home to stop the fight and he also became the victim of that situation. Then by god's grace some people came out and stopped the fight. After all this, we took the boy and called the police and told about the theft situation.
The police probed the boy(A) in red sweater and asked him about that boy(C) who had the phone. After all this, we went to that place and called that boy(C) and finally we got the phone back. We thanked those policemen and came back to our party. After coming back, we finished our dose and then broke the DJ floor with our rocking dance.

There are two types of engineer found in India, one who studies according to syllabus only and one who studies as well as implement it. In electrical/electronics, it generally happens that an electrician has sound knowledge of any circuit than an engineer. The difference between two is that an electrician knows only how to implement it but an engineer knows both things, i.e., how to implement it and why he is doing it.
![]() |
| This is not our Robot. Just a pic. |
The major problem comes while implementing any circuit is that when you are done with your circuit, you connect it with supply and you don't get the result. After this, you try to debug the circuit and rebuild it and then again you don't get the result after trying. This is the most irritating thing which many people face while building any circuit. To tackle this problem here are some suggestions:
2. If possible, first try to build it on breadboard. If you get success, only then make it on PCB.
3. Make sure that no wires are shorted.
4. Never give up.
In this post I am telling my experience regarding making of final year project, viz, RF Based Metal Detector Robotic Vehicle. We started making this project from 31st March and it took around 5 days & 5 nights to complete our project.
First, I am gonna explain who are "We".
1. Manu Khandelwal (Me)
2. Arvind Rajput
3. Piyush Pateriya
4. Rishabh Kadian
This was my team for the project, but only on the papers, i.e., officially. As every project group has this issue that only one or two people are interested in working and rest are interested in watching, playing and waiting for the work to be done. My group also had this issue but I knew this thing from the day when our group was made. So I had already made my mind that the whole work is to be done by two people, i.e., Me and Arvind.
As I have lot of friends, there are also some names in my friend list who are always ready for any help. So I am gonna showcase some names and I want to personally thank them because without them this project would have been really tough job for me.
So, the real team includes
1. Manu Khandelwal (Me)
2. Arvind Rajput
3. Ashwini Verma
4. Ashish Ahuja
These four are actual "We".
In the previous semester, we did only the simulation part to show in the minor project presentation. The simulation part was like a cake walk for us, because we easily found the required stuff on the internet. But now, this was our major project which has a total marks of 350 in this semester. So the project means a lot for us. But still, we were not taking our project seriously till the declaration of exhibition not done. On 30th March, while I was watching movie, our project mentor called me and told about the exhibition. After the call, my mind was in the confusing state, I was not able to decide that whether I am happy or stressed. "Happy", because our project got shortlisted for the exhibition and "stressed", because the project was not even started and the exhibition was scheduled on 5th April.
Just after this, I called Arvind, made a list of things to buy and went to Chandni Chowk. We got back to our place, i.e., Greater Noida at 10 PM after purchasing all the components. Now from 31, we had to start our project and we were left with 5 days. I started building the transmitter and receiver circuit with Arvind and in two days we completed the circuit. After completing the circuit, I moved on to the programming part. This was proved to be the toughest part for me because being an electrical engineering student, I didn't even know the "P" of programming. Ashish helped me in the programming part. Although, the programming was not much tough but still it took us 2 complete days to run the code.
Apart from this, we were also making metal detector circuit parallely. Now we had all the circuit, we just had to connect it from the battery. So I did the same but didn't get the result. At that time, I became tensed but I did not loose my hope and I was continue struggling with the circuit. But unfortunately didn't find the bug in the circuit. My roomates advised me to take a rest, then I started watching songs and went for a walk at 4 AM.
After coming back from the walk, I recalled the time when we were making solar inverter. At that time whenever we met some problem in building the circuit, we used to watch a motivational video by Amitabh Bachan. So I opened my laptop and played the same video. After all this, Ashwini checked the whole circuit and advised me to build it on breadboard, so I rebuilt the circuit with new components on the breadboard. In approximately 2 hours, I completed the circuit. Building a circuit on breadboard is easy and takes less time than building it on a PCB.
Now it was the day of exhibition, I was little scared and excited because I did not know that the circuit was going to be work or not. So I crossed my fingers and connected the battery, but still I met the same problem. I got frustrated after this, so I dropped the idea of showing the project in the exhibition. The exhibition's timing was 2 PM and at 1:45 PM, I was checking wires of the project in my room. Suddenly, a thing stroke my mind, and I replaced the encoder of the transmitter circuit with the new encoder and connected the battery and found what? Yes, the LED was glowing, the project was working correctly. We were shouting with our full energy.
After all this I quickly got ready, called my team and reached college to participate in the exhibition. Successfully we delivered our presentation to the judges and got back to our room.
During the making of project, there were several co-incidences happened. I learned one major thing from this project, viz Never Give Up. Sooner or later you will definitely get the result if you are working hard.

I follow only one thing in my life which is "Do What You Love and Whatever You Do, Do With Your Best".
Well, since my childhood I don't like doing study. I always run away from study. It is one of the boring things to do for me. I only do study at the time of exams. Instead of study, I like to do practical work or working on a project. Whenever I get the chance, I participate and make the projects.
This post is explaining my experience and the whole construction of the robot, which I have build during my fourth semester to participate in a college fest. With the help of this information, one can easily build a robot for Robo War competition.
How the idea of making a robot came to our mind??
It was the time of our annual tech fest, Ebullience 14. We were very excited because we did not attend the previous year fest. So we decided to take part in this tech fest. Actually, we already did participate in freshers party by performing expressionless dance. So, this time it was mandatory for us to take part in a technical competition, after all we are engineers.
Then the question came that in which competition we should participate?
After a lot of discussion and argument, my group decided to make a robot for Robo War competition. In the starting I was not agreeing, but Ashish convinced me and then finally we decided to make a robot.
After all this, Ashish gave us a short lecture on Robotics. He explained us about connections of toggle switches and motors. Then I made a list of components. Because this is used to be my work. I am the list maker in my group.
Team Members: Manu Khandelwal(me), Ashish Ahuja, Ashwini Verma, Sahitya Suman and Saurabh Rathour.
Here is the list and a brief explaination about these components required for making a basic robot (wired).
1. Motors
A motor is used to rotate the wheel of a robot, so that it can move in a certain direction. This is one of the most important component of robot. Basically we use DC motors in the robot.Specifications of Motor
- If you are building the robot for Robo Rally competition then you need to buy motors of medium RPM(rotations per minute) and medium torque. Because in this competition your robot has to climb on the slope, running on rough road and crossing the obstacles. So the motors should be of good torque. And in this competition there is a time limit, so the speed is necessary.
- If you are building the robot for Robo Race/Nascar then the motors should be of high RPM and low torque. Because in this competition the robot has to cover a distance in a minimum time. So you don't need the motors of high torque. But make sure that the speed is not too much high other wise you may have a problem in controlling the robot.
- If you are building the robot for Robo War competition then the motors should be of high torque and medium RPM. Because in this competition your robot has to clash with opponent robot and to make it immobile or throw it outside the arena, you need motors of good torque. If your motors are not good in torque then you will be defeated by opponent. And to make a good collision between robots you need medium RPM motors, so make sure that the speed is medium, not too low. Make sure about the supply rating of the motors, because in some competitons there is a restriction of supply voltage 24 V or 36 V.
2. Chassis
After motors, here comes the second most important part required for making a robot.- Again if you are building a robot for Robo Rally or Robo Nascar then you can buy your chassis from the market. Make sure that the chassis is not too heavy. In this competition you don't have to worry about the design of robot.
- If you are building for Robo War then don't make a mistake by buying chassis from the market. Because in this competition you need a heavy weight robot, so that no one can push your robot. You can build your chassis by welding iron sheets. This is the best option for making a chassis of a tough robot.
3. Remote Control
For making a remote control, you can use either PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) of size 6"x4" or Breadboard. I would recommend you to use PCB, because connections are tight in PCB and you can have your soldering experience too.
4. Control Switches
For controlling the robot, you can use either toggle switches or normal switches. But toggle switches are far better than normal switches in terms of controlling. You need to use two toggle switches, one for left motors and one for right motors. Make sure that the switches are of good quality.
Connection of Toggle Switches
5. Wheels
Another important part for making a lethal robot. You can make a 4 wheel robot or 6 wheel or 8 wheel tank, it depends on you and design of your robot. Well, we have made a 6 wheel robot cum Tank. More tyres require more motors and hence increases the power. Make sure that the wheel base is quite enough, because the wheels are carrying the whole weight.
6. Connecting wires
Don't forget to buy some wires. The wires which are used for connecting remote control with the robot and giving the supply.
7. Supply
Without supply your robot is dead. You need a DC supply with the output of 12-24V, to power your motors. You can buy a portable adapter from the market which costs around ₹200/-. You can also use laptop charger to power your robot. We have used this too.
8. Other components
Soldering rod, Soldering wire, tape, glue gun, etc.Designing and Making of "The Thallaiva"
Design
It is the most important thing in making a robot because you need to consider all the things simultaneously like length, breadth, height, weight, toughness, mobility, etc. The first four parameters which are length, breadth, height, weight, respectively, should be according to the competition rules. Also the weight of the robot should not too much high and not too much low. The weight must be according to the power of the motors, so the motors can withstand with the weight.
Well, we have used the square design of dimensions 35x35x20 cm and the weight was 10 kg. Our design was really good and many people including teachers appreciated our design.
Weapons
After the design of the robot, here comes the most interesting part of this war machine, which is weapon. People use various types of weapon in their robot such as hammer, grinder, hydraulic lift, fire with spirit, etc.
Our tank did not have any turret to fire bombs or missiles. Instead of attacking weapons such as hammer, grinder, etc, we have used iron spikes with a pointed head, which was working as an attacking weapon as well as defencing weapon. This was the most unique part of our robot and everyone got surprised by this idea.
We have used this because we knew the reality. There is no use of hammer, grinder and such weapons because the opponent robot won't be made of plastic. These weapons only used for gaining points, not for destroying the opponent robot. And we always thought about destroying the opponent robot, because this was the rule of game.
As we all know "Everything is fair is love and war" and after all this is the war game.
Making of "The Thallaiva"
The making of Thallaiva started with the buying of components. First I made a list and then we all went to Old Lajpat Rai Market, situated near Chandi Chowk, Delhi. We visited the shop no. 594 named Legend Electronics in the market and bought all the stuff.
After this, we explored other shops also, had some food and returned to our hostel. After this, to build the basic structure of the robot, we visited the back area of our college where mainly repairing works are happened. We took the iron sheet from the junkyard and started cutting the sheet. We were not experienced thats why the cutting was not proper. Then one of the carpenter named Eva, helped us. And together we cut all the sheets. The servant was not taking so much interest in our project, so to wake up his interest, we bought him beer and some cigarettes. And then we again resumed our work. After all the welding and cutting process, our structure got ready. We faced some problems too, but we made it. One of the major problem was that the motor shaft was not fitting in the tyre. But Eva solved this problem with the help of condoms and fevikwik.
The remote control work was done by Ashwini and Sahitya, because they already knew how to solder. After all this, we connected the remote to the supply with the help of laptop charger and got ready to see the working of our first robot. But the robot did not work, because of some wrong connections. After correcting the connections, we again tried, and this time it worked. We started dancing and shouting "Thallaiva". The sound of the robot was like real war machine. That was the time, we were ready for real war.
Old Lajpat Rai market is one of the biggest electronics market in India. You can get everything related to electronics. There are several shops where you can buy your stuff for making any project or robot. Such shop numbers are 385, 594, 644 (for motors and other materials), 462, 290 (for batteries) and 197 (for glue gun).
Name of the Robot
You all must be thinking why we used this name Thallaiva for our robot, while others named their robots such as Jarvis, Optimus Prime, Destroyer, etc. Actually, the name Thallaiva was given by Vibhor Saxena. He used to live with us in the Hostel. He was an MBA student, so he knew that how the name of any product could be sell. He knew all the tactics to popularize any product thats why this name was decided. And he was correct, the name got very popular in the whole college.
In The Battlefield
Now the day came and we started practising by driving the robot. The robot was driven by Ashwini and I was the advisor and giving the directions. Then the announcement occured and our first match/war was with our friends team. After looking at their robot, we were in little tension, because their robot was bigger and heavier than ours robot. But after starting of the match, it hardly took 2 minutes to finish the match. And the result was "Thallaiva won". Because we finished the match in a very short time, so we got an advantage by getting direct entry in finals. In the finals, there were total three teams in the arena, one from first year, one from second year and one was us, also second year. So, we started with a simple plan to win that match, but after sometime one opponent robot got immobile. Now, only two teams left and we were continuously making strategy to win that competition. But the opponent robot's motors were much powerful than ours. But still we fought with our best and finished the match by getting second position. And we were happy with our performance because this was the first time when we made any robot and won any prize. Finally, we got our certificates and prizes.
